Meet the owners
The Owners - Operators
Brian & Valerie McCarthy have partnered with Matt Gordon to build the first indoor sports facility in Florida, designed specifically for pickleball. The process started several years ago when Brian was on the board of the Bird Key Yacht Club. The Club was looking for alternative uses for the two lots they owned on Sarasota Bay. Why not pickleball courts? While the Club decided not to pursue the project Brian continued to see the demand in Sarasota for courts. Since then dozens of outside courts have been developed and indoor play has become more and more popular. The problem, court availability. As demand grows so do the number of players on very few indoor courts with restricted hours.
Loyd Robbins, of Harry Robbins Realty, called Brian and said we can find a building or lot that can accommodate a 24,000 - 30,000 SF free span building to build 12 indoor pickleball courts. A local team was quickly assembled of Southern Cross Contracting and Jesse Balaity Property Enhancement, to develop the concept. In addition to pickleball courts, we need a pro shop, for equipment needs and advice, and a barista/juice bar, for after game socializing and refreshments. Of course, add restrooms and showers.
This prospective multi-million-dollar facility is one more project in Brian’s real estate career, in which he has developed more than ½ billion dollars of commercial real estate. Valerie is in her element too. Valerie has been involved in physical fitness her entire career, with over 20 years’ experience in the fitness industry.
